Ludhiana, September 29

The district health department today raided an unauthorized scanning center that runs from a house in Karnail Singh Nagar. An unregistered portable ultrasound machine and cash were seized during the raid. Two suspects were arrested.

Department officials had received a denunciation and had been watching the center for a few days.

According to information shared by District Family Welfare Officer Harpreet Singh, the center was run by two people, Karan Malri and his assistant.

Previously, Karan worked as a public relations officer in a nursing home and it seems that there were connections through which he received patients. The second person used to bring patients to the scene on motorbikes to carry out illegal sex determination tests.

“A decoy patient was sent to the scan center today and the case was set at Rs 30,000. The serial numbers of the banknotes were noted. She was taken to the center by bicycle by Karan’s helper. We recovered Rs 20,000 (same notes) which was paid by the decoy patient while the rest of the amount was given to intermediaries. In addition, Rs 12,500 in cash was also seized from them,” Dr Harpreet said.

The suspects have been arrested and an FIR has been registered. The ultrasound machine and the money had been handed over to the police.

Civilian surgeon Hitinder Kaur warned the owners of the scanning center that anyone who engages in illegal activities and violates Health Department standards will not be spared. They would face strict action.
