A 25-year-old student, Najeeb Shehu Umar, was arrested by Katsina State Police Command for allegedly beating his mother-in-law, Asiya Mohammed, to death and injuring his father.

The development was confirmed by the Command’s spokesman, SP Gambo Isah, to reporters on Wednesday.

Isah said the student pounded Mohammed with a pestle until he died.

According to the police public relations officer, the dispute at Omar’s home had been going on for a long time.

The 300-level student from Dutsinma Federal University in Katsina State had reported his mother to his father for what he described as an unacceptable attitude.

The incident, which took place in the Ambassadors Quarter, plunged the community into crisis

Isah said the suspect, who has been reported multiple times, had a history of drug abuse.

He said: “The suspect had a misunderstanding with his mother-in-law, Asiya Mohammed, went into the kitchen, grabbed a pestle, hit her several times with it on the head and as a result she suffered head injuries and was confirmed dead by a doctor.

“On the spur of the moment, the suspect also struck his father individually with said drumstick on his leg and fractured various places on his leg.

“The suspect has been arrested and has confessed to committing the offence.

“The said pestle was recovered as an exhibit.
