Cougar athletes gear up for fall sports campaigns
With classes resuming this week at all campuses in the Escalon Unified School District, the fall sports season for high school teams isn’t far behind.
In fact, the football kicks off with a scheduled scrimmage at Engel Field on Friday night August 12.
Action is scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the Football Cougars schedule invites them to host the Gregori Jaguars, with competition scheduled for freshmen, JVs and college students. Andrew Beam returns as head coach of the varsity team and has also taken over as the new high school athletic director. Look for a feature article with the new AD in the August 17 issue of The Times.
After starting the season with the home scrimmage, the JV and Varsity teams travel to Reno, Nevada for a game against the Damonte Ranch Mustangs on Friday, August 19.
Trans-Valley League play begins with Homecoming against the Hughson Huskies on Friday, September 16.
Volleyball players will take to the court for the GEBO Scrimmage, scheduled for Saturday, August 13 in Merced, with freshmen, JVs and college students all competing. A scrimmage at Pleasant Grove in Elk Grove will see all three tiers on the road on Wednesday August 17 and only the university will participate in the Orestimba tournament on Saturday August 20. Teresa Williamson returns to lead the varsity volleyball team.
The college football and volleyball teams enter the season as defending section champions.
The cross country begins with the traditional purple and gold intrasquad competition on Wednesday, August 17 and the Cougars travel to the Calaveras County Fairgrounds for the Frogtown Scrimmage on August 30. Michael Bower is the head coach this season.
Girls Golf begins with a road game in Sonora on August 23, with a home game in Waterford on August 25. Martin Louro will be the team’s head coach.
