575 drug addicts, suppliers arrested

POLICE arrested 575 drug addicts and suppliers and confiscated drugs and substances worth $ 2.8 million from dealers while a total of 359 patients were hospitalized between January and October this year.

In her post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information, Advertising and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the Cabinet had approved a report on the drug abuse situation among children, youth and people. the population in general, as presented by the Minister of Public Service, Labor and Social Welfare, Professor Paul Mavima who chairs the interministerial working group concerned.

The task force’s efforts are aimed at reducing damage and demand while increasing treatment and rehabilitation and promoting community and social reintegration.

“The nation is informed that a total of 575 accused people have been arrested of which 192 were suppliers and 383 were end users. In addition, thanks to effective surveillance, law enforcement officers were able to seize and recover drugs and substances amounting to $ 2.8 million, ”she said.

“A total of 16 campaigns against drugs and drug addiction have been carried out on various platforms, including the media. Regarding treatment and rehabilitation, a total of 359 patients were hospitalized between January 2021 and October 31, 2021.

Minister Mutsvangwa said the Ministry of Civil Service, Labor and Social Protection works with stakeholders who are implementing parenting programs.

The parent club’s strategy is to facilitate reintegration once a survivor is released from treatment.

Minister Mutsvangwa said resuscitation of family clubs serves as prevention mechanisms as they instill positive parenting through community structures.

Minister Mutsvangwa said other strategies included identifying and improving community activities, including establishing parent support groups and patient support groups.
