Laurel Police Department participates in “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”.
“You will see additional officers at checkpoints and stop cars and make sure people are not driving drunk and trying to help keep our citizens safe,” the police chief said. by Laurel, Tommy Cox.
According to National Road Safety Administration, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is an initiative to educate people about the risks and consequences of drinking and driving. The NHTSA website says there is generally an increase in drinking and driving-related fatalities during the Labor Day holiday period.
Cox says people will now notice that LPD is taking extra precautions.
“During the holidays is when everyone gets together… And so, there is usually a little more alcohol consumed during these times, so you want to pay a little more attention to the roads and make sure our citizens stay safe, ”Cox said. .
He adds that if you are planning or attending a party, make sure you have a safe way for everyone to get home.
“If you have a party or a barbecue and there is alcohol to consume, and most of the time there is this time of year, you grill, maybe drinking a beer or two … but if you are organizing in this situation, let’s make sure there are designated drivers that you provide other types of drinks for and encourage them to make sure people who maybe have a little too much drunk go home safely, ”Cox said.
According to Cox, the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign began on August 20 and runs through Labor Day.
