OAKLAND – Amid close scrutiny of his treatment of women and calls for his withdrawal from the race, Republican candidate for governor of California Larry Elder is shaking up his campaign team and hiring a new campaign manager , learned POLITICO.

Campaign manager Louis Barnett, whose appointment was announced when Elder entered the gubernatorial race in July, confirmed on Sunday that he no longer holds the post.

In his place, Elder hired Jeffrey Corless, a GOP consultant who once served as the political director of U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina. Corless confirmed to POLITICO that he took on the role as of Friday.

“I can confirm that Mr. Elder has asked me to take on a key role in running his campaign,” he said in a text message. He said he “was focusing on advising Mr. Elder on how to run his campaign as we seek to bring this effort back to victory,” and referred all other statements to Ying Ma, the spokesperson. in the countryside. Ma did not return requests for comment.

The reshuffle appears to be an effort by the candidate, who recently led the GOP in the polls, not only to hold onto his position, but to stay in the game after last week’s revelations.

Barnett said on Sunday he would now be working on a voting committee to boost Elder’s candidacy and recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. Corless, he said, brings “a phenomenal operation” to Elder’s candidacy. He added: “There are a lot of things that are going to be announced in the not-so-distant future. “

Elder made the decision to change campaign manager the same week his campaign was battered by new revelations, including a POLITICO report that his ex-fiancee alleges that during an abusive relationship he had fired a loaded gun at her during an argument. Elder has denied these accusations.

CNN reported last week The story of Elder’s rude remarks on women, and The San Francisco Chronicle Elder once said that it was “smart” for women to tolerate sexism and offensive behavior in the workplace. The stories prompted former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner, both gubernatorial candidates, to demand his removal from the race.

The GOP candidates will meet for a fourth debate this week, but Elder and Jenner have both declined to participate in one of the candidate forums.
