Other emergency COVID-19 customer protections have ended, with changes to be rolled out in phases

SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced today that it will extend the moratorium on utility disconnections until September 30, 2021. The moratorium has been put in place in March 2020 by California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

“We believe that extending the moratorium on disconnection of services for all customers allows additional state relief efforts to take shape while protecting our financially troubled customers,” said Marlene Santos, executive vice president and Director of Clientele at PG&E.

As part of the company’s continued efforts to help customers manage their invoices, PG&E will automatically enroll eligible customers into new extended payment plans by the end of September to coincide with the potential end of the moratorium.

Additional changes to COVID-19 emergency customer protections

While the moratorium has been extended, other emergency customer protections put in place by the CPUC during the pandemic have expired.

Recertifications and post-registration verifications for the California Alternative Energy Tariffs (CARE) and Electric Family Rate Assistance (FERA) programs have resumed.

  • CARE / FERA clients whose program eligibility expired between March 4, 2020 and June 30, 2021 will need to re-certify. Customers whose program eligibility expired on or after July 1, 2021 will need to recertify within 90 days.

  • The earliest a client can be removed from CARE / FERA is October 1, 2021 after a series of direct mailings and targeted email communications.

PG&E has helped nearly 300,000 residential customers sign up for CARE since February 2020, offering eligible customers a monthly discount.

More, Certification of practicing physicians for the Basic medical program resumed.

  • Active Medical Baseline customers who have enrolled in the Consumer Protection program and customers with non-permanent medical conditions as designated by their physicians will need to recertify for continued eligibility. PG&E will proactively communicate with Medical Baseline customers and remind them of their upcoming recertifications.

  • The transition coincides with the launch of PG & E’s new online physician portal Medical Baseline. This new portal will allow clients and their physicians to complete the Medical Baseline certification / recertification process fully online. The new online application is available on pge.com/medicalbaseline.

In 2020, 192,000 clients were enrolled in the PG&E Medical Baseline program. As of June 2021, more than 256,000 residential PG&E customers were registered with Medical Baseline.

PG&E has proactively reached out to nearly 400,000 affected customers since the start of the pandemic and continues to partner with local community organizations to support customers.
