Watch as we surprise Jackie Grisdale from Poland as the 2021 Student Athlete of the Year!

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – For nearly 40 years, we’ve honored the best and brightest high school students in the Valley as our Student Athlete of the Week.

Watch the video above to see the surprise reveal of our Student Athlete of the Year!

This year, we received hundreds of applications and selected 40 students who met our four criteria. They must excel in the classroom and be successful in sports. We are looking for leaders in their class and children who give back to the community.

Poland senior Jackie Grisdale is one of those students who ticks all of these boxes.

She competed in six different sports. She was an A-level student, vice president of the National Honor Society, secretary of her senior year class, and has accumulated over 200 hours of volunteer work over the past four years.

All of this made her a perfect candidate to be Student Athlete of the Week.

But Grisdale is much more than that. She did not only play sports in Poland, she is the most decorated athlete in the history of the school, graduated with 20 university letters!

In basketball, she broke four school records, won 100 games and scored more points than any player in school history, boys or girls.

Grisdale was a first-team All-Conference golfer and qualified for the state three times in track and field and cross country. She wore a perfect GPA of 4.0 and was a valedictorian.

And for these reasons, Poland’s Jackie Grisdale is our 2021 student athlete of the year.

Grisdale will also receive a $ 1,000 university scholarship thanks to the generous support of our one-year sponsors, Belleria Pizza and Italian Restaurant, Thiel College, Kufleitner Auto Group, TCF and DeBartolo Corporation.

“I’m going to Quinnipiac University in Connecticut to play basketball,” Grisdale says. “I am really excited. It will be such a great opportunity and a challenge for sure. But I am ready to face it and use what I have learned so far and continue to grow as a person and as an athlete. I can’t wait to see what happens next. “
